V-module Competency #5: Spatial Visualization

Competency Activity Overview

Learning Goals:

Spatial visualization is one of the five core virtual technology competencies identified in
the literature that students need to master for their future career success. The learning objective for this module is to encourage and introduce students to use mobile applications to train and improve their spatial visualization competence that could ultimately assist their adoption of virtual technologies applied in their future apparel industry working environment.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Students will be able to define spatial visualization and recognize its role in the human cognition process.

  • Students will be able to explain how spatial visualization functions in fashion design CAD software.

  • Students will be able to actively improve their spatial visualization ability using common mobile applications.

  • Students will be familiar with creating simple 3D drawing models using common mobile applications.

Delivery Method:

This module is organized into eight main sections, where each section addresses a key topic in teaching 3D/virtual technology. The resources include educational materials, such as in-class presentation, academic reading, informational videos, individual and group assignments, and case studies, which can be used to build students’ knowledge in the use of 3D technology, and ultimately foster their spatial ability through hands-on learning experiences with various 3D/virtual technology applications.
